SSC CGL Exam Pattern
Before knowing SSC CGL Syllabus it is very important to know the pattern of the exam because you must know how the exam is conducted.
Staff Selection Commission conducts SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination in four stages: Tier-1, Tier-2, Tier-3 and Tier-4 examination. Where you have to pass each step according to SSC CGL posts.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier -I
The SSCCGL Tier-1 exam will be conducted online in which there will be 4 sections and there will be around 100 questions in total. In each question you will be given four choices out of which only one option will be correct.
If you choices wrong answer , 0.5 marks will be deducted. For SSC CGL Tier-1 exam, you will be given a maximum of 60 minutes. and, 80 minutes time is given to physically challenged students (for blind students and students suffering from Cerebral Palsy).

SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier-II
Only those candidates who have appeared for SSC CGL Tier-2 examination have passed the Tier-I examination. SSC CGL Tier-2 exam is also conducted online and in this too you will be given 4 options for each question out of which only one option will be correct. SSC CGL Syllabus
The SSC CGL Tier-2 exam consists of four papers.
- Paper 1 – Quantitative Ability
- Paper 2 – English Language and Comprehension
- Paper 3 – Statistics
- Paper 4-General Studies (Finance and Economics)

The time duration fixed for each paper is 2 hours. The duration of the examination for blind candidates is 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Paper-3 will be only for those candidates who are Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) /Jr. Statistical Officer (ISO)/ Statistical Investigator . Grade- || and apply for the post of Compiler. So it will be mandatory to give paper-3 of SSC CGL Tier-2. SSC CGL Syllabus SSC CGL Syllabus
Paper-4 will be given only to those candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) / Assistant Accounts Officer.
Paper-1 and Paper-2 will be compulsory for all candidates, whether you are applying for any posts of ssc CGL. SSC CGL Syllabus
If you fill these three posts (USO, AAO, Compiler) in the post preference then you will be required to give all the papers of Tier-2 (Paper-1,2,3,4). SC CGL Syllabus
Paper-1, Paper-3 and Paper-4 will have negative marking of 0.5 marks for each wrong answer whereas in Paper-2 each wrong answer will be given. For 0.25 marks will be deducted.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier-III
SSC CGL Tier-III exam is a descriptive paper which is conducted offline. Meaning that you will have to use pen and paper to complete this exam as you have done in any school board or college examinations.
SSC CGL Tier-3 exam is conducted in two languages, Hindi and English, you have to choose one of these languages. Candidates cannot choose any other regional language other than Hindi and English before appearing in this examination.
Through this test, the language skills, grammar knowledge, vocabulary usage and writing skills of the candidates are tested in English or Hindi. SC CGL Syllabus

Tier-3 exam is of 100 marks, for which you are given only 60 minutes to complete it. The time allotted for the candidates belonging to the PWD category is 80 minutes.

You should keep in mind that to pass the Tier-3 exam of SSC CGL, you have to get at least 33% marks. Descriptive paper has a minimum qualifying score of 33%, the rest depends on the cut off, it may be even higher.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier-IV
SSC CGL Tier-4 Exam is basically a computer skills test which includes your two types of tests.
- Data Entry Skill Test (DEST)
- Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)
Data Entry Skill Test (DEST)
It is mandatory to give DEST to those candidates who have applied for the post of Tax Assistant in CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) and CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) Department.
To qualify the Data Entry Skill Test, you are required to write 2000 words in a scheduled time of 15 minutes on a computer in the English language. It tests the typing speed in your computer.
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)
If you have selected the posts from these following posts of SSC CGL Group-B, then it is mandatory to give CPT to you.
- Assistant Section Officer (CSS)
- Assistant Section Officer (MEA)
- Assistant (AFHQ)
- Inspector (Examiner)
- Central Excise Inspector
- Preventive Officer Inspector
The CPT test consists of three modules: Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Generation of Slides .If asked in brief, this CPT module of SSC CGL Tier-IV Exam is taken to test your computer knowledge, that you know how to use the computer and how capable you are.
The marks of SSC CGL tier-4 are not included in your final result, this is a qualifying exam. If a candidate fails the CPT or DEST test, then he will not be selected for the respective posts mentioned above, in which you were compulsory to give the SSC CGL Tier-4 Exam.
This means that even if you fail the SSC CGL Tier-4 exam, you will still be a contender for other posts of SSC CGL, no matter if you fail or Pass the SSC CGL Exam Tier-4 Computer Skills Test.
SSC CGL Exam Syllabus

General Awareness
The questions of this part will be aimed at testing the environment around the candidate, knowledge of the events currently taking place and general awareness of the society.
The questions to be asked to you in this section will be from these following topics
History’s Topic is Harappa Civilization, Vedic culture, Medieval India and their important systems; India’s freedom movement and their leaders
Geography’s topic :- about countries and their geographical details, Famous Seaport and Airport and their location.

This section will test your mathematical skills to find out . The questions asked in this section of SSC CGL Tier-1 Exam will be from these following topics:

Quantitative Ability

Statistics
